We, the rude & crude dudes of BADITUDE, have had many nicknames throughout our careers. Oftentimes they would be related to trucks, farm equipment and dangerous animals. But unfortunately, we have not been able to claim ownership of the ULTIMATE NICKNAME. In this, our debut feature about MOMENTS IN MUSIC HISTORY, we will look at the coolest, most famous nickname and its origin.
You may be familiar with an English rock band called U2, or as their fans call them, “You, Too”. They are most popularly known as the band that ended Apartheid and whose music comes pre-installed on Apple™ products.
Below is an actual transcript of a conversation between U2 members, shortly after they formed their band and decided to adopt cool nicknames so people would like them more:
U2 SUCKS! U2 SUCKS! U2 SUCKS! U2 SUCKS!
Paul Hewson: “Oi, lads, I’m gonna change me name to ‘Bono’ for some reason. It seems like a pretty cool nickname.”
Dave Evans: “That’s a really cool nickname, Paul! I like it a lot. But I think I’ve got you beat in the nickname department. Wait til you get a load of the cool nickname that I came up with!”
Paul Hewson Bobo Bono: “What do you have in mind, Dave?”
Dave Evans: “Alright, get ready to be blown away! My nickname is super COOL and also tough! Are you ready for this?!”
Bono: “I’m ready! Lay it on me, Dave! What’s your new U2 nickname?!”
Dave Evans: “………THE EDGE.”
Bono: “The Edge?! WHOA! That is REALLY DAMN COOL! The Edge.”
Dave Evans The Edge: “Hell yeah! I am THE EDGE.”
And on that day, music history was made in England. The coolest nickname in modern music was born. If The Edge did not claim The Edge as The Edge’s nickname, one of us dudes from BADITUDE would have surely taken it.
